Opening up education and research in games as a new field of art in a digital society shaped by advanced technologies and information and communications environments
Games are composed by integrating a wide range of elements, including fine arts, music, moving images, programming, and other digital technologies. Viewing games as a “new comprehensive art form of the present age,” Tokyo University of the Arts established the Game Course in 2019 within the Department of New Media and the Department of Animation of the Graduate School of Film and New Media, and has developed education and research related to games. The expressive possibilities and production technologies of games continue to evolve day by day. In recent years, research and practice using games have also expanded into fields such as medicine, education, and regional revitalization, and games have come to play a role as tools for realizing a better society.
Building on the achievements of the Game Course, the Department of Games and Interactive Arts develops education and research that further expands the diversity and possibilities of games through approaches from the field of art.

Practical education for nurturing people who have broad knowledge of evolving science and technology and can play active roles internationally
At the beginning of the first year, students take intensive exercises in which they learn various approaches to game design, planning and development methods, and research methods, deepening their comprehensive understanding of games and interactive arts. They then work on individual production and research projects in the first year. In the second year, students work on their final projects. Through seminars, playtests, and critique sessions, they receive a range of advice and complete their final works over an extended production period.
The department also actively engages with industry and provides opportunities for students to receive advice on their works. In addition, it actively offers practical education aimed at nurturing people who can play active roles internationally, including research projects conducted in collaboration with the University of Southern California and other institutions.
